NATIONAL SQUAD

Our goal in National Squad is to train swimmers capable of qualifying for and producing medal winning performances at national level. Our aim in this squad is to support swimmers to:

  • Regularly qualify for and final at NER Short and Long Course Championships.
  • Produce frequent peak performances at target Level 1 meets
  • Prepare youth/senior athletes for University / N&D Performance Programs
  • Develop towards specialism (sprint, middle-distance or distance)

Members of the National Squad range in age from 14 to 18 years (age as at December 31st), and enjoy a varied training programme that includes:

  • Medley based training, developing towards specialism (sprint, mid-distance or distance)
  • Supplementary training on kick, dolphin kick, maximal speed, stroke efficiency and stroke skills (starts, turns and finishes)
  • Developing skills and tactics towards world class parameters

We work hard to provide a cohesive training environment that promotes excellence and ambition. In return, we expect commitment from our squad members. We expect National Squad members to:

  • Attend the prescribed number of weekly sessions
  • Train at the prescribed density and intensity for the group
  • Adhere to the competition / event program
  • Always demonstrate a ‘performance / growth’ mindset
  • Act as a mentor for Age Group & Junior members of the club

Becoming a member of National Squad should be seen as an honour and an achievement. To be considered, swimmers should:

  • Be ranked in the top four for testing/monitoring in Regional Squad
  • Have high attendance in Regional Squad (including attendance at morning sessions)
  • Be competing in the prescribed events and competitions
  • Take responsibility for training and competition performance
  • Be able to effectively balance training and school.

Swimmers in Youth Development 2 must be within the outlined rankings above.

Session frequency varies depending on age. Broadly, swimmers can expect:
