About the Open Water Squad

Coach: Ben Gilchrist

Our Open Water Squad supports swimmers to take their skills beyond the pool and into a fresh, exciting and natural environment. Led by fully qualified coach Ben Gilchrist, the squad gives swimmers the chance to enjoy a full-body workout, build confidence in open water and experience swimming in a way that feels more connected to nature and the elements. Whether swimmers are already experienced in open water, training for events, or simply looking for something different from pool-based swimming, this squad provides a safe, supportive and enjoyable environment to develop.

Who It Is For

The squad is based at Ellerton Park and runs between May and October, in line with the venue’s open water season. Swimmers range from beginners in open water through to those competing nationally and internationally, including swimmers preparing for open water events and triathlons. Sessions are open to adults and swimmers aged 12+, and applicants must be competent swimmers. A wetsuit and swim cap is required for all sessions.

Benefits of Joining

The aim of the Open Water Squad is to help swimmers feel confident, safe and supported in open water. Swimming as part of a coached group means swimmers are not training alone, with guidance available for technique, safety, confidence and resilience. Whether the goal is physical and mental wellbeing, building open water experience, training for competition, or simply enjoying the benefits of swimming outdoors, the squad offers a positive and inclusive way to expand each swimmer’s journey.
